The capital of North Dakota, Bismarck has a rich and varied history that includes the earliest settlers from the Mandan peoples. Located at the crossroads of the Missouri River and northern transcontinental railroad, Bismarck was founded in 1872 and was originally named Edwinton (later renamed to reflect the honor of the German chancellor).

The city is also known for its heritage as a destination on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and as the home of the Dakota Zoo. The state’s government is located here, as well as its law library and the Bank of North Dakota, the nation’s only state-owned bank.
