Located along the Missouri River, Bismarck is North Dakota’s capital city and the seat of Burleigh County. It is an important regional medical center, a major transportation hub, a manufacturing and trade center, and a diversified economic and cultural center.

Local government in Bismarck operates under a commission style of municipal governance. The citizens elect four commissioners on an at-large basis for terms of four years. They exercise both legislative and executive powers, and the mayor also serves as president of the commission.

The City of Bismarck is a progressive community with a strong sense of responsibility to its residents, business owners, and employees. It offers quality services and amenities, excellent recreational facilities and an outstanding educational system from kindergarten to graduate college degrees.

A number of museums and attractions are located throughout the city. These include the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum and the Former Governors’ Mansion. The city is also known as the home of the Dakota Zoo, which is a fun place to visit with your family.

Other sites worth visiting are the ruins of On-a-Slant Indian Village, which is believed to have been founded by the Mandan people in the 16th century. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and Double Ditch Indian Village State Historic Site are also within the city limits.

There are also many parks throughout the city that provide a variety of outdoor recreation. There are baseball fields, softball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, racquetball courts, outdoor hockey rinks, and indoor ice arena. There are also golf courses, lighted horseshoe and gun clubs, and several playgrounds.

The city is a large tourist destination, with visitors coming from all over the world to enjoy its many attractions and activities. This includes the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, which is a popular attraction with tourists and locals alike.

Bismarck is also home to a number of colleges, including Bismarck State College and the University of Mary. These colleges offer student-centered learning, and put on many artistic and cultural events each year.

Another highlight of the area is the Culture ND Summit, an annual event that highlights cultural and international diversity in North Dakota. This event provides a forum for cultural groups and businesses to network and learn about the best practices that are necessary for welcoming a diverse population into the community.

There is also a wealth of information available in the North Dakota State Library, which has an extensive collection of historic documents and newspapers. These can be searched online.
